From a well-represented field of entrants,
AONE member teams “The Donovans” and “The Dursos” tied for first
place in the August 25th Last Green Valley Rallye with 85 points
each. However, since the Donovans successfully answered the
tie-breaking question, they were ultimately awarded first place.
Postponed from its original rainy date, the day began a bit
ominously (at “Purgatory” Chasm, no less) for our small three-car
AONE contingent, with a thick fog hanging over the meeting spot. The
spirits of the team were further diminished by the absence of Last
Green Valley Rallye title holder Lauren DeWaele due to other
commitments (read: Alfa project).
There was a brief driver’s meeting at which the route and rules were
explained by rallye organizer and puzzle-master extraordinaire Tom
Letourneau. The participants were “rallied” with a preview of first
place prizes: a matching set of “driver” and “navigator”
double-decker teapots.
The event began promptly at 8:30 from Sutton, MA, and wound its way
through the fields and forests of southern Massachusetts and
northern Connecticut. Participants were asked a variety of
questions, which ranged in difficulty. Let’s just say that the roads
weren’t the only twisted things experienced this day!
The Rallye ended at Thompson Speedway, with all participants
arriving safe and sound. Tom led the cars on a tour of the old
course and previewed plans of the new road course set to break
ground this year on October 15th. Since the vintage race was
unavoidably cancelled due to rain the week before, the track owners
treated Rallye participants to a wonderful lunch at the Raceway
restaurant.
Flash: Late-breaking news! After careful deliberation and
considerable thought over Irish coffee, wine, and homebrew, the
Donovans decided that the two trophies would best be shared amongst
both first-place winners, and so they presented the Dursos with the
navigator trophy. Perhaps if Gene wasn’t driving a lesser car (read:
Lotus Elise), he wouldn’t have sped by the tie-breaking question and
they would have won. We will never know.
