Cape Crusade IV will be held this year on Saturday, October 18. Due to other commitments there will be no rain date. In the event of torrential downpours the event will be canceled, but overcast or drizzly skies will not intimidate the Crusaders. Such skies usually clear up by mid-morning and tops can be lowered then. The weather on the Cape has been spectacular this late summer and fall (except for two recent days of heavy downpours) so we will hope for the best and send a final notice out a few days before the event after checking the forecasts. Past Crusaders have seen Wellfleet, Truro, Provincetown, Chatham, Cotuit, Falmouth and Woods Hole. This year we will see "Something Old, Something New and Keep Fingers Crossed for Skies of Blue." The "Something New" will be a new route that takes us on back roads through the quiet village of East Dennis to Sesuit Harbor; past the beaches of West Dennis, including Chapin Memorial Beach; different back roads to Ostervlle; a drive (and stop) at Dowses Beach near East Bay; a drive along Sea View Avenue to see the beautiful homes along Nantucket Sound; back roads past the Wianno Golf and Country Club; a left turn to Oyster Harbors; back roads through the small town of Marstons Mills; past the Cape Cod Airport on back roads through Farmersville to Route 130 North to wind our way thorough Sandwich—one of the oldest towns on the Cape—to our restaurant for lunch, the Pilot House, located on Sandwich Harbor on Cape Cod Bay near the Cape Cod Canal. The "Something Old" will include a comfort stop at Millway Marina, a drive down beautiful Route 6A, unspoiled by fast food restaurants, shops selling rubber boats and other ugly souvenirs so that Cape Coddahs can preserve the centuries-old cemeteries, New England churches, art galleries, Captain's houses and other delights thanks to the local Historical Commissions. For those who wish to make reservations to stay over on the Cape on Friday or Saturday night, reservations at motels should be easy as the summer folk have departed, but it would be wise to make those reservations early. The drive will end up at the Pilot House Restaurant and those returning will be close to the Sagamore bridge for a quick getaway. Those who stay over can chose any number of great towns to visit. As in prior events we will meet at the Dunkin' Donuts in Patriot Square around 10 a.m. for coffee, donuts and Car Talk. After a drivers' meeting and a review of some high tech maps to be distributed to the navigators, we will start the drive at 10:30 a.m. Those who may be a little late should call Crusade Commander Phil Bostwick on his cell phone 627-927-0057 and we will wait for you. Hoping to see you at the Cape on October 18 for the Fourth Crusade. Please send Phil an email at pdbostwick@gmail.com or call him at 617-927-0057 if you plan to join us and include the number of persons in your car for a restaurant head-count. Directions to the Crusade Start After getting on the Cape, take Route 6 (the Mid-Cape Highway) to Exit 9A (the exit sign says "134 South, Dennisport"). Go south to the second stop light and turn left on T.F. Smith Road. Take the first left (Enterprise Road) into the parking lot. The Dunkin' Donuts store is on the corner just past the Cinema. There are several gas stations on Route 134 after you get off the Mid-Cape at Exit 9A for those who need to refuel or use restrooms. There is also a restroom in the Dunkin' Donuts. If you get lost, call my cell phone for a Ground Controlled Approach. |
