Saturday, March 1st - 6PM
This is the first in what could become an ongoing series of movie screening parties exclusively for AONE members and their guests. AONE Treasurer Peter Walker has made all the arrangements for us to gather at the Josiah Smith Tavern (revered home of our annual Holiday and Potluck parties) in Weston, MA, on the evening of Saturday, March 1st, at 6PM.
Set against the sexy, glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing in the 1970s, the film is based on the true story of a great sporting rivalry between handsome English playboy James Hunt, and his methodical, brilliant opponent, Austrian driver Niki Lauda. The story follows their distinctly different personal styles on and off the track, their loves and the astonishing 1976 season in which both drivers were willing to risk everything to become world champion in a sport with no margin for error: if you make a mistake, you die. This movie promises to have something for everybody! (It is rated R, in case you're considering bringing a young and/or innocent guest.) Debra and Michael Leccese, if you bring your Niki Lauda Spider, you get to park right in front! But wait, there's more! The AONE Directors have authorized up to $1000 for the purchase of a new club audio/video system! ($1000 buys a lot of A/V equipment these days.) We're talking a new projector with over double the brightness, contrast, and clarity of the one we've been using, a big new 10'-diagonal reflective screen to enhance the image, and a 5.1-channel surround sound system with speakers, blu-ray/DVD player, and amplification. So we should be able to watch the film (and future films and club slide shows) with all the visual and audible glory they deserve. And if that's not enough ... pizza! We'll have popcorn available to munch on during the movie, and then bring out a pile of pizzas (the good Neapolitan style) either as an intermission or after the screening. The club will supply bottled water and soft drinks, but if you prefer an alternative beverage with your movies and pizza, bring your own. A donation of $10 per person at the door will help defray the hall rental and pizza expenses. So that we know how much pizza to get, you must sign up with Peter (anderwalk@earthlink.net or 978-524-8102) by Thursday, February 27th, at the latest. See you at the flicks! Arrive around 6PM — the lights go down at 6:30 sharp! Directions to the Josiah Smith Tavern From the East: Take Route 128 (I-95) to the Weston/Route 20 exit (Exit 26). Follow Route 20 west for 1.2 miles until you reach the first set of lights. Take a right onto School Street, and travel one block to the town center. Take a left, and the tavern is a white clapboard building on the left. From the West: Take Route 20 east. One-half mile past the Weston Police Station, you will reach a set of lights.
