It's time to fire up the ol' projector again! Our next AONE Pizza and a Movie Night is coming up on Saturday, March 7th. Our previous screening parties have met with excellent turnouts each time, so we hope you'll join the fun!

Since many of you have already seen the popular Ford v Ferrari movie, we've decided to present an excellent film that tells it like it really was. Shelby American - The Carroll Shelby Story is a recent release that was produced by Adam Carolla's company, Chassy Media, the people who brought us three other films that we've really enjoyed on previous Movie Nights (The 24 Hour War, A Sicilian Dream, and Winning: The Racing Life of Paul Newman). Here's a brief synopsis of our upcoming feature:

Carroll Shelby came from humble beginnings working as a chicken farmer in rural Texas. He exploded into the auto-racing scene by beating all the top-tier drivers of the era and winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1959. All while still wearing his chicken-overalls.

Carroll had a heart condition that nearly killed him, forcing him to retire from racing. He started Shelby American and assembled a rag-tag team of hot-rodders to execute his vision of building groundbreaking sports cars like the Shelby Cobra. He also led Ford and the GT40 to multiple victories at Le Mans over Ferrari.

Shelby's cars, driven by the greatest drivers in the history of racing, cemented his legacy. He is the only man in history to win Le Mans as both a driver and a manufacturer. And is still the only American auto-manufacturer to win the World Manufacturing Championship.

Veloce Today, in a movie review entitled "Better than Ford v Ferrari", had this to say:

The feature film Ford v Ferrari was a big hit; at least it made its $100M investment back in two months for 20th Century Fox, but it was a drama that took theatrical license to change events. Fortunately there is now a documentary produced by Adam Carolla and Nate Adams that explains what really happened, and follows the chronology much more closely than the Fox film.

...There's enough evidence from people in the documentary to show that the whole battle between Ford and Ferrari was one of titanic egos.

The film has been getting other excellent reviews, despite its being a documentary as opposed to a Hollywood story that, shall we say, tended to distort things a bit. And Carroll Shelby's natural matinee idol looks (that Matt Damon can only dream of having) is another reminder that real life can often be better than fiction. To further whet your appetite, here's the official trailer:

We'll again be settling into Dave & Vi Pratt's rearranged living room in Dedham, MA. It's centrally located, just a mile and a half off Route 128 (I-95). This venue saves the club money and makes it easy to change the date in case of inclement weather.

Before the film, there's pizza! We'll gather around 5:00PM, the pizza will arrive around 5:30, and we'll dim the lights and run the movie at 6:00. We'll also have popcorn available to munch on during the movie, and the club will supply bottled water and soft drinks. Please note that Dave no longer makes homebrew, so bring your own beer, wine, or whatever — there's now a dedicated fridge for you to stash it in.

After the movie, we'll repair to the kitchen for coffee and desserts (contributions appreciated — please let Dave know if you're bringing something so we don't suffer from confection overload!).

Finally, we'll present another set of short Alfa-oriented video subjects for any who might be interested in hanging around. We've gathered together a bunch of clips from movies (and ads) in which Alfas have appeared over the years — fun to watch! We've got several new ones since last time, but if you know of more, please send them (or links to them) to me!

Our presentations, don't forget, will all be displayed on our club's spiffy big-screen, multi-channel audio/video system for your viewing and listening pleasure.

There is no charge for members and their families, but we'll be asking a $10 donation from non-members to help defray the pizza expense. So that we know how much pizza to get, you must sign up with Dave Pratt (dave@dvpratt.com or 781-320-8208) by Friday, March 6th, at the latest. Seating is limited to 30 people and is first come, first served!

Teatro a Casa Pratt is located at 300 Westfield Street, Dedham, MA. Take Route 128 (I-95) to Exit 16 for Route 109 east toward Dedham. In about 3/4 mile, turn left onto Westfield (if you hit a traffic light you've gone too far). Bear left at immediate fork. 300 Westfield Street is on the left, 0.8 mile from Rt. 109, #300 (and perhaps an Alfa banner) on a tree.
