By George Dolak Spirits were high for the start of the drive as the faithful gathered in Newburyport under sunny skies and warming temps. Greetings were exchanged as we congregated at the Dunkin' Donuts and all were glad to see Director Peter Walker in attendance. We departed on schedule and paraded down the city's famous High Street for a drive-by review of its Federalist mansions. Our urban tour was brief, and a turn or two saw us crossing over the Merrimack River and proceeding toward Salisbury Beach. With the Atlantic on our right, the course was clear and we headed northward to Seabrook, and then Hampton Beach, where we made a brief stop. There, we were met by Toby & George Chris, who had driven across New Hampshire from West Lebanon to join us. With multi-million dollar mansions on the left and priceless seascapes to our right, we motored through North Hampton, past Rye, and then on to tiny New Castle. A loop around the beautiful grounds of Wentworth by the Sea and we were ready for a stop at Historic Fort Stark. A brief explanation of its history and function in coastal defense was followed by an opportunity to stretch one's legs and explore the park or simply relax and enjoy the water views. A quick transit of Portsmouth and we crossed the Piscataqua and proceeded through Kittery, Maine. Before long we were in York, driving alongside the ocean again. A brief stop at Cape Neddick was utilized by some for a "Calender" shots of their Alfas with Nubble Light in the background. While scenery is enjoyable, the hours had passed and hunger now hastened us onward toward Ogunquit. The allure of the twisty road had diminished as satisfaction of our appetites was now paramount. Appeasement was soon realized as we clustered into The Roost Cafe, where we relaxed and enjoyed nourishment and lively conversation. A second Alfa Romeo 4C, piloted by Luigi Minoletti, soon arrived in the parking lot, making it the largest grouping of new Alfas in town - no doubt! After dining, some members left for other destinations while many enjoyed more sea views while strolling the Marginal Way. The AONE Tri-State Seacoast Sprint was enjoyed by no less than nineteen souls in ten examples of our favorite mark: Liane & Tom Brooks Thank you all for your participation and I look forward to enjoying additional AONE drives with you this season. |
