Movie Screening

By Dave (text) and Vi (photos) Pratt

'Twas a sell-out crowd for AONE's first Pizza and a Movie Party of the year on Saturday, March 4th. Thirty patrons is the capacity of our "theatre" and we regretfully had to turn away a couple of last-minute responders — hope you can make the next one!

While we waited for the sun to get low enough to dim the screening room sufficiently, we hung out in the kitchen for a while, sipping wine, homebrew, and other beverages, and munching on popcorn (we're still using Newman's Own brand, in honor of The Racing Life of Paul Newman movie we watched together a year or so ago). Then the pizza arrived right on schedule, a half hour after the official gathering time. Everyone reconfirmed that the offerings of Pizzeria Alto Strada (a.k.a. Dedham's High Street Pizza) were excellent, and we'll continue to use them unless they go out of business. The pizza was accompanied by salad that Vi had assembled (served with Newman's Own dressing, of course).

Once the pizza was demolished, we sauntered into the living room, where the club's big-screen multi-channel A/V system was set up. Our main feature for the night, The 24 Hour War, was very well received. It's a documentary film (released just last year) about the epic battles between Ford and Ferrari racing in the 1960s, especially at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It included lots of great race footage, interviews with such legends as Mario Andretti and Dan Gurney, and gave us a good look into what was compelling Enzo Ferrari and Henry Ford II during the period. Everyone came away both entertained and edified!

Peter Bourassa of Motorsports Marketing Resources (MMR) joined us for the evening and brought along several books that were pertinent to the night's movie (including A.J. Baime's Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari and their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans, on which our movie was based). Before we dimmed the lights, Peter spoke for a bit about the books and no doubt kindled a good deal of interest in them. Thanks, Peter! As the movie was rolling its closing credits, we adjourned back to the kitchen to critique the film, and for coffee and many various delicious sweet treats brought for us by the DeWaeles (thank you kindly!). After we milled around for a while, some folks left but most of us resumed our seats to watch some of The History of Motor Racing - 1960s. We started part way through so that it would correspond to the time period of our main feature. This was a British film with a British narrator (i.e., a little dry ;-) and had a newsreel feel to it but was interesting nonetheless, and some of us watched all the way through to the end. Both films were provided to us by our official club movie buff / collector, Phil Bostwick, who unfortunately wasn't able to join us for the party. Thank you, Phil!

Also among our guests was Roger Carlson, the new President of AROC-CT. He'd like to share this message with us all:

As the new president of AROC-CT I would like to thank AONE for inviting us to their activities and welcome AONE members to join and participate in the activities of our club. We have semi-monthly breakfast meetings (10 AM-Noon) on the 2nd Sunday (Southbury, CT) and the 4th Saturday (Bantam - near Litchfield, CT) of each month. Planning is underway for two activities in April — a group trip by rail to the NY Auto Show and Naskart racing in Montville, CT. Additional activities for 2017 include back road tours, attendance at car shows, a summer picnic and caravaning in July to attend the national convention in Montreal. AONE members who are interested in updates on our activities can email me at rwcarlson@att.net.

When the lights came up after the second feature, we piled up the pizza boxes, loaded the dishwasher with beer glasses and coffee cups, and said our farewells. With driving season coming up soon, the next Movie Night probably won't be until late autumn sometime. See you then, and in between!Tiny Quadrifoglio
